The points system used for the championship was as follows: 9-6-4-3-2-1 for the top 6 drivers at each race. Only the best 9 results counted towards the title, although no driver scored points in more than 8 of the races. Rounds 8 and 11 were missed due to competing in Formula Atlantic races.

This was the first Temporada series since 1972 although only two rounds were held in 1978. Many of the Formula 2 European Championship teams and competitors took part in both races. Fred Opert Racing used Goodyear tyres for both races.
